This upcoming week is American Education Week (November 15th- 19th). To celebrate and prepare, I’m sharing the fun days ahead: Monday, November 15th: In honor of World Kindness Day, • Wear a shirt with a positive message • Classrooms will participate in a kindness project. • Other small Random Acts of Kindness highly encouraged. Make sure you share your kind acts with your classes! 😊 Tuesday, November 16th: “Warm Up”for Education Day • Wear an exercise/sports outfit • Classrooms will complete additional exercise breaks throughout the day. Wednesday, November 17th: Career Day • Dress for Success or as your future career. • Classrooms will explore careers through a variety of activities. Teachers will set up virtual conferencing meeting adults to share their career. Please contact your child’s teacher if you are interested. Thursday, November 18th: Thankful Thursday • Students will create thank you cards in class to show appreciation for staff, friends and family. Friday, November 19th: SJES School Spirit Day • Wear South Jefferson spirit wear and/or purple and gold. Let’s show appreciation for our school and show our pride for South Jefferson! 💜🥳 Thank you! Dear South Jefferson Elementary families, Please remember that school is closed on Thursday, 11/11, in honor of Veterans Day, and the half-day on Friday, 11/12, is a remote learning day. Our child nutrition services will continue Friday, with food packs available for pickup from 9:30am-10:30am.

South Jefferson students shared the story, “The Dot” by Peter Reynolds in our library and made their own “marks” on the world, creating this awesome bulletin board. Super proud of them!

Menu changes this week: Tuesday will be “breakfast for lunch” and Wednesday will be pork rib sandwiches, corn, beans, fruit and milk. Have a great day! 💜 Ms. Mahoney

Elementary School families may be interested in the following Public Service Announcement regarding a COVID-19 vaccination opportunity for children from 5-11 years old. For Questions regarding the clinics, please call the Jefferson County Health Department at 304-728-8416. COVID-19 vaccinations are NOT required for school attendance.

Our Read-A-Thon begins tomorrow! Can we break last year’s records with the amount of reading we accomplish???? Let’s go, Reading Roadrunners!!! (Runs from November 1st-15th)

A special thank you to Ms. Slagle’s 4th grade class for mulching and watering around our trees on the playground and for removing support stakes from the trees, as they are thriving and blessing our playground with their beauty. This project was conducted with the help of Victoria Lusk from the Cacapon Institute, Ms. Slagle and Rick’s Total Lawn Care.

Our annual PTO Read-A-Thon is back! We are excited to begin this project next week (will run from November 1-15 and will directly benefit our SJES library and our PTO. While this IS a fundraiser, we LOVE the aspect of challenging our students to read for a good cause—-and to learn that reading is FUN, at the same time. Our goal is to purchase books for the library so your support is very much appreciated. Flyers are coming home this week! Thank you! Ms. Mahoney

Hello, everyone! Just a reminder that we will be conducting our first remote instruction drill tomorrow, Friday, October 22nd. All students should bring home their device today. Devices and cords are to be returned on Monday, October 25th. We will be conducting live instruction sessions tomorrow morning and your children have been practicing so they are ready for tomorrow! Thank you to Middleway Volunteer Fire Co for teaching us about fire prevention and safety!

Staffing shortages are impacting school systems across the country. For Jefferson County Schools (JCS), the shortages have significantly affected our staff time to complete critical behind-the-scenes work that goes into sustaining excellence in teaching and learning. Beginning October 15th, Jefferson County Schools will dismiss students 1/2 day every Friday. Staff will spend 3 hours completing all non-student supervision work (planning, SAT/IEP meetings, creating instructional materials, deep cleaning, etc).
