Our 2nd grade classes enjoyed a beautiful fall day, learning about nature, at the Cool Springs Nature Preserve. The Cool Spring Nature Preserve consists of 63 acres of forest, meadow and marsh in southern Jefferson County, West Virginia. Bullskin Run, a major stream with significant historical value, borders one side of the preserve. In Spring 2020, the entire preserve was placed under a conservation easement with the West Virginia Land Trust. How lucky for SJES that we are just a mile away from this natural wonderland!

Fourth graders have been having fun studying the Middle Ages! Nothing like the Black Plague and royal privileges to make an impact and to engage our students! 😁 Also, every 4th grader is receiving a free pass to all National Parks and recreation areas as part of the Every Kid Outdoors program , thanks to Mrs. Moody and Samantha Wickenheiser, the Education Coordinator at Harpers Ferry National Historical Park. Finally, a huge thank you to Mr. Traywick, 4th grade parent, for visiting and leading our students in a free drawing activity. These fourth graders are so lucky!

We had a fantastic assembly this week, “Celebrate West Virginia” with Mick Souter. He shared songs and instruments (guitar, banjo, mandolin, harpsichord and violin) about our beautiful state and celebrated the pride in our state. Listening to our students sing along, participate and have fun was such a special experience!! Thank you, Mr. Souter, for sharing your gifts with us at SJES!

Ms. Horne's Kindergarten class has been learning that different “models” can represent the numbers 0-5. To practice building models, each student drew a number card, traced the number and then glued the number to their city strip. They then constructed building towers (models) to represent that number. Students had so much fun designing and creating their own city street. Math is fun!
