Celebrate World Down Syndrome Day on Thursday, March 21st! Rock your socks on Thursday—-as colorful and patterned as possible—-to honor those with Down Syndrome and to celebrate inclusion, diversity, uniqueness and acceptance.

Author and illustrator, Brian Yanish, taught us about using materials we already have on hand, like plastic bags and toilet paper holders, to invent cool projects. These students took it to the next level in creating fun toys and creatures! Awesome!

What a wonderful day for South Jefferson! We had a visit with author/illustrator, Brian Yanish, who showcased his books, Shark and Bot, Junk Rethunk, Pirate Chicken and his newest release, Sweet and Sour. Our students learned about the process of creating and writing a story and bringing your book through the process of illustrating and publishing. Specials thanks to our SJES PTO, Rainbow Montessori School, Annie Young, Fuzzy Books and SJES librarian, Mrs. Moody, for making this visit possible. We had a blast!

These lovely girls received Positive Principal Referrals for helping out in a classroom without ever being asked! Mrs. Rouchard said that both Molly and Marian are both kind and helpful. I completely agree! Congratulations to both! 🎉

Congratulations to Jaxson Rice for his Positive Principal Referral! Jaxson cleaned up a spill for a friend and helped out when his friend needed it! What a great example for everyone at SJES. Well done!

What an active and engaging day of professional learning! Elementary art teachers participated in hands-on activities today as they continue to grow as professional educators. It was just one of several district-wide training opportunities JCS was proud to offer staff on this professional learning day as they continue to perfect their skills in our schools and classrooms. Thank you to the Andrews family for sharing their adorable two week old baby lamb, “Fluffanutter” with South Jefferson. This sweetie visited Miss Jackson’s Head Start class and Mrs. Fincham’s 2nd grade class. What a special visitor!

Mrs. Mangum’s 3rd grade class completed a Mystery Science lesson on push vs pull to learn about Force. They took on the bridge challenge where the students constructed a paper bridge and stacked as many pennies as they could on the structure before it collapsed. Some teams were able to stack over 100 pennies on their “bridges”!!! Science in action and fun at the same time!

As a reminder, there is no school for students tomorrow, Friday, March 8, 2024. This is a professional development day for staff.

We capped off Read Across America Week with our annual SJES Book Character Parade and a visit from the WHS Key Club, who spent time in our classrooms, reading aloud to our students. Just to give you a perspective on the parade—-all students march through the halls twice, so that everyone can see costumes and book suggestions. Students who don’t have a book are given the chance to select from a classroom library or from our SJES library so that everyone can participate. Special thanks to our staff who tried to snap as many photos as possible during the parade, which is not an easy feat, with everyone on the move. Also, thank you to the WHS Key Club and our Special Events Committee for helping to create a memorable week! Many fun memories! 📚📖

Our annual SJES Talent Show was a blast! Thank you to Mrs. Shearer, Mrs. Blank and Mrs. Dinges for the behind-the-scenes help and to the awesome students who showcased their talents. A shoutout to the staff that knows how to have fun. 🥳

Positive Principal Referrals were given this week to two of the kindest students at South Jefferson: Troy Venable and Bentley Duvall. Both young men demonstrated kindness and respect this week as they bravely faced challenges, supported friends when they were down and demonstrated what true friendship is all about! I am super proud of them both and so impressed by their example! 💛💜 Ms. Mahoney

Miss Potts’ First Grade class has been learning about fact families and created yummy dominoes to practice in a “sweet” and creative way! ➕➖

Mrs. Zimmerman’s Kindergarten class played musical sentences! The students walked in a circle as the music played and, when the music stopped, they had to stop at a sentence and read it out loud. The sentences consisted of sound out words and kindergarten caution words that the class has learned so far. They also discussed ending punctuation marks! Awesome! 👏

Thank you to Miss West Virginia, Karrington Childress, and Miss West Virginia’s Teen, Allison Dodson, for visiting South Jefferson during Read Across America Week! We loved seeing you and visiting with you. Both Karrington and Allison are former South Jefferson students so we are ESPECIALLY proud of both of them and their accomplishments!

We had a wild and wonderful “Wacky Wednesday” at South Jefferson! One of the best parts of my job is the daily reminder to have fun, take moments to be silly and bring joy to every day. Today was a blast and made me smile! 💜💛 Ms. Mahoney
