October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, a time to highlight the importance of safeguarding online activity from harmful cyber attacks. Each Friday this month, we'll share tips to help our students, staff, and families secure their sensitive data and stay safe online. Tip #1: Protect your passwords! Be sure to secure passwords for your accounts and NEVER share them with others. Many platforms now allow you to enable two-factor authentication for added security to keep unauthorized users from accessing an account. Enable this security feature whenever possible. Visit www.cisa.gov/cybersecurity-awareness-month to learn more about Cybersecurity Awareness Month.

Happy National Custodian Day to the three that take such great care of us and our school! We are so grateful for you, Mr. Hill, Mr. Baker and Ms. Watson! 💜

For a kick-off art project this year all students at South Jefferson created a feather during art to be a part of a large collaborative mural. The mural was inspired by artist Kelsey Montague and her hashtag #WhatLiftsYou. Like Montague's murals, our artwork is "interactive." Anyone can be a part of the art and try on the wings. Students created lines, line patterns, and textures (depending on grade level). They incorporated a word or image about "What Lifts You." The feathers are colored in with a mono-chromatic (one color) color-scheme showing value to make their design stand out. Then we put them together. They did an AMAZING job!

Apple fun in Mrs. Zimmerman’s class today! The students completed STEAM activities, dissecting apples and making patterns/counting with apples. Of course, taste testing was involved and all senses were engaged. Well done, Mrs. Zimmerman’s class!

After many years of rising scores on the WVGSA test, JCS saw a steep decline during the pandemic, from which we have not recovered. The latest scores show staggering deficits in ELA and math that keep hundreds of children below the mark for proficiency. To ensure that our students are ready for academics and life beyond the classroom, we are adjusting our elementary education program for 3-5 grade students. Please visit www.jcswv.org/expansion to learn more. There will be a district-wide TWO-HOUR EARLY DISMISSAL for all students on Friday, Oct. 7, 2022, to support teachers as they prepare to make these adjustments. Thank you for your trust and support.

I want to thank everyone for helping our first couple of weeks go smoothly….we’re still settling into a routine (3 day weekends throw those off, especially for our youngest students!) and each day gets better and better.
I’m just always grateful for the community’s support because it is so helpful and I want you to know that it does not go unnoticed.
Thank you!
