Happy Staff Appreciation Week!!!

Students from the FACS (Family Consumer Sciences) fashion class at Washington High School used their sewing skills to bring superheroes, designed by second-graders at South Jefferson Elementary School, to life. The high school students presented the finished heroes in-person last week. The students also collaborated to create backstories for all the characters. We are proud to see older students taking the time to inspire and support younger students!

Our fourth graders enjoyed a field trip to Fort Frederick on Thursday. The centerpiece of the Fort Frederick State Park is the only stone fort built by a British colony during the French and Indian War. In its three century history the fort has seen activity in four military conflicts, is one of Maryland first state parks, and was a Civilian Conservation Corps camp in the 1930’s. Built in 1756, the fort's stone wall and two barracks have been restored to their 1758 appearance. What a way to extend their learning and bring historical “real world” experience to life for our students! Well done, 4th grade!

So, let’s talk about a PERFECT partnership and project….executed and designed by Mrs. Magaha, educator at WHS, Mrs. Fiolek, Art Educator at SJES, and the 2nd grade team, Mrs. Fincham, Mrs. Sturba and Mrs. Vogel. Our 2nd graders created their own superheroes, under the supervision of Mrs. Fiolek, in art class. The sketches were sent to Mrs. Magaha and her students in her Fashion class created superhero “stuffies” for our 2nd graders, based on their design. On paper, when we began planning it over a month ago, this sounded awesome. In reality, it was AMAZING. This week, the WHS students traveled to SJES with Mrs. Magaha and presented the finished projects to their 2nd graders. The pairs then worked on stories about the superheroes together, had lunch together and even shared a recess. Later, the 2nd graders “read” with their “stuffies”. Our 2nd graders haven’t stopped talking about this day and it will be a lasting memory for them. Thank you, Mrs. Magaha and WHS Fashion class students! 🦸🏽♀️🦸🏻♂️🦹🏽🦹♀️🦸🏼🦸🏾♂️

Our sweet little chicks hatched and cheeped their ways into our hearts. Our students (and staff!) fell in love with these little guys. An incredible experience for us all. The students got to vote on names and will miss our newest friends as they move on to bigger adventures with the Tuitele family. Thank you, Nurse Danielle and librarian, Mrs. Moody, for giving us this experience. (special shout-out to Mrs. Fuller, parent and substitute extraordinaire, who watched over our little chicks while subbing in the library!) 🐥🐣💜 (After this experience, they may be the most socialized chicks ever!)

Fourth grade fun in the STEAM lab! 🧪🔬🧫

Before Spring Break, our kindergarten classes held an egg hunt on the playground! 🥚🐥🐣🐰

So much is going on at South Jefferson! Many thanks to former SJES student AND Bee Keeper, Aiden Fisher, who came to present to Mrs. Fincham’s 2nd grade class. They had just finished a CKLA unit on insects. The students loved it and hung on his every word. Their prior knowledge really helped their understanding of his presentation! He was AWESOME!! 🐝🐝🐝

Congratulations to Liam Dekker for receiving a Positive Office Referral this week. Liam politely waited for two kindergarten classes to pass by, as he prepared for lunch. He was respectful and an excellent example of the manners and kindness that we are proud to see at SJES. Well done, Liam!

How fortunate are we, to have the Potomac Valley Audubon Society’s Cool Spring Nature Preserve in our backyard??! Our kindergarten students immersed themselves in nature today on a culminating field trip to explore their five senses. 👀👂🏻👋🏼👅👃
There is something joyful about seeing our kids playing outside and learning about nature. Thank you, Cool Springs, for hosting us today! So much fun!
