Jefferson County Schools (JCS) is pleased to announce the appointment of Ian Hillman as the district's new Deputy Superintendent of Instruction. In this role, Mr. Hillman will lead the Department of Instruction, supporting principals and instructional staff while advancing innovative opportunities that prepare students for what's next.
Mr. Hillman brings a broad and deeply rooted background to the position, having served Jefferson County Schools as a teacher, assistant principal, principal, and director. His experience as a school administrator at all three levels, elementary, middle, and high school, provides him with a comprehensive understanding of instructional leadership and the needs of students and staff across the district.
"Jefferson County Schools has provided me with so many meaningful leadership opportunities," said Hillman. "From the classroom to the district level, I am honored to serve Jefferson County in this role and commit to supporting principal development, fostering teacher leadership, and exploring opportunities that prepare our students to succeed. I will work tirelessly to develop structures that honor expertise, empower teachers as leaders, and promote shared ownership of student success."
Throughout his career, Mr. Hillman has been instrumental in creating and expanding student-centered programs that connect learning to real-world pathways. His work includes initiatives connected to RISE, contributions to Grow Your Own (GYO) and Medical Education (MedEd) programs, and helping establish an Emergency Communications (EmComm) program designed to prepare future dispatchers. He is also leading efforts to launch a plumbing program for the upcoming school year, further expanding career and technical education opportunities for students.
As Deputy Superintendent of Instruction, Mr. Hillman looks forward to continuing his collaborative approach by providing support, resources, and feedback that foster transparency, trust, and shared leadership among principals and instructional staff.

Mr. Hillman is also a proud Jefferson County Schools parent. He and his family are deeply connected to the district, with three children currently enrolled: a senior at Washington High School, active in FFA and planning to pursue a career as a school counselor, a freshman at Washington High School on the Varsity Cheer Squad, and a kindergarten student at South Jefferson Elementary School who loves cars and police officers.
Mr. Hillman will assume his new role immediately.
